In plain English

Artistic approval gives the artist control over creative decisions, song selection, production, mix, master, and final delivered recording. Without it, the label can request re-records, reject delivered material, or alter recordings after delivery. With it, the artist retains creative authority subject to agreed technical standards.

Why it matters

Creative control is the foundation of artistic integrity. Labels with unrestricted approval rights can demand multiple re-records, delay delivery acceptance indefinitely, or release significantly altered versions of your work.

Where it can land

The same clause is drafted three ways. These are the positions we see, worst first, so you can tell at a glance which one is in front of you.

Off marketPush back
  • Label has sole discretion to reject recordings as 'commercially unsatisfactory'
  • Label can alter, remix, or edit recordings without artist consent after delivery
  • Artist cannot veto a re-record request
StandardWorth negotiating
  • Commercially satisfactory standard is defined but subjectively assessed by the label
  • Label can request up to 3 re-records before accepting delivery
Artist-friendlyWhat fair looks like
  • Artist has final creative approval over all delivered content
  • Label can only reject on objective technical grounds, not commercial taste
  • Re-record requests require written reasons; artist can accept or decline
